I enjoy trying new foods and visiting new restaurants, which is easy to do here in Milwaukee, where the foodie scene is always evolving and new options are frequently available. So The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy Reichert was a delight to read.
Lou is the owner of Luella’s, a French restaurant located in downtown Milwaukee, named after her grandmother, who taught her much of what she knows about cooking. She’s doing pretty well until they receive a scathing review from the local food critic, a gentlemen writing under the name A W Wodyski. He only visits the restaurant once and has no way of knowing that earlier that day the chef caught her fiancé with another woman resulting in a disastrous dinner service.
While drowning her sorrows over the bad review, Lou meets a charming British man who can’t find anything positive about the city, so she drunkenly agrees to show him the sights and the best places to eat…as long as they agree not to discuss work. They visit a variety of gems, including Northpoint Custard, The Milwaukee Art Museum and Sprecher Brewing Company. Al, the Brit, falls in love not only with Milwaukee, but also with Lou, and is devastated to learn that his review will cause Luella’s to close.
The detailed descriptions of Milwaukee, combined with the light quirky romance between Lou and Al make this a breezy read. If you live here, you’ll enjoy celebrating the city with these characters and if you’ve never been, you’ll want to visit soon!
