Memorial Day 2015
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetery
While we enjoy our barbecues and an extra day off next week Monday (May 25), we should take a moment to remember the real reason for Memorial Day. It has its origins in the aftermath of the Civil War and was at first called Decoration Day. The day was designated as a time for decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, hence the former name. It was not an official nationally declared holiday until 1971, with the passage of the National Holiday Act. We solemnly honor all those who died serving our country on this day. As a reminder, the Milwaukee Public Libraries will be closed throughout the Memorial Day weekend- Saturday, May 23 through Monday the 25th. We wish you all a pleasant holiday weekend and look forward to seeing you again on Tuesday, May 26th.
