In His House at R'lyeh, Dead Cthulu Waits Dreaming
Today marks the 124th birthday of Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He is not alive today, but for all we know his shambling corpse awaits the day where it will burst forth to feast upon the flesh of the living. Lovecraft is one of those tragic literary figures, having died unable to make a living off his writings. Yet today, he is held as a master of the horror tale, his Cthulhu mythos having inspired an innumerable number of games, books, movies, comics, stuffed animals, and more. Yes, that’s right, stuffed animals based off a series about unspeakable, maddening horrors that Man Was Not Meant to Know.
Now, here at the Milwaukee Public Library, we have plenty of books both by Lovecraft or compiling his works, as well as books about the man himself. While perhaps a better celebration of his life and work would be a slow descent into madness as rats scurry through your walls and your neighbors all turn into fishmen, it might just be easier to stop into a library and check out a neat new book.
