Celebrate Week of the Young Child with board books!

Board books are an essential tool for early literacy development because they are a child’s first exposure to books. Board books are especially designed for little ones in mind:

  • They encourage visual, auditory, and tactile exploration and allow babies to use all of their senses. 
  • The thicker cardboard pages are perfect for when a child is exploring their world by putting everything in its mouth. 
  • The thick pages also help infants and toddlers develop their pincer grasp, which is the first step in learning how to write. 
  • A board book gives a child an object on which to focus his or her sensory and motor activity.
  • And, reading aloud to a baby allows the child to focus on a favorite sound -- the sound of the caregiver's voice.

Little hands will love to make the butterfly finger puppet flutter as she describes her day with her family.

 

Baby Loves Spring!  by Karen Katz

Lift the flaps and learn about spring in this colorful and interactive board book.

 

Diggers Go by Steve Light

Learn the different sounds of construction vehicles, such as the forklift that goes, “beep beep beep beep beep beep whirrrffftt bonk,” all while engaging in pretend play.

 

Play by Elizabeth Verdick & Marjorie Lisovskis.

The first page says it all.  “Every day, in every way, babies play.”  Play pat-a-cake and peek-a-boo while reading this fun book with your child.
