Celebrate the Week of the Young Child! Building young children’s vocabulary by talking to them about everyday tasks is crucial for reading readiness.

Stop in at the Bakery Play & Learn for more fun ideas, including reading, singing, playing, and writing at this fun-filled play date for preschoolers and caregivers.

Enjoy these scrumptious books about baking and then head to the kitchen (real or play) to talk and bake together!

 

Mr. Cookie Baker by Monica Wellington (Ages 2-5)

Mr. Cookie Baker mixes up batches of delicious cookies and decorates them with care. Chidren arrive eagerly to buy and eat the cookies in his bakery. 

My Pop Pop and Me by Irene Smalls; illustrated by Cathy Ann Johnson (Ages 2-6)

A grandson and his Pop Pop spend time together baking a delicious Lemon Bar Cake Bake. With rhyming and onomatopoeia this story is a great mixture of read-aloud fun and sweet familial bonding.

 

Piggies in the Kitchen by Michelle Meadows; illustrated by Ard Hoyt (Ages 3-7)

Five lively and well-intentioned little piggies are making quite a mess in the kitchen while their mother is away.  The rhythmic beat of this book will whip up your enthusiasm in no time!

 

The Baker's Dozen by Dan Andreasen (Ages 3-6)

In the wee hours of the morning, a baker exuberantly creates delicious pastries so he can welcome his customers, anxious to enjoy a sweet treat. Count along with the baker as he creates 12 different pastries, counting from one éclair to twelve cupcakes in this scrumptious concept book!

 

A Little Bit of Love by Cynthia Platt; illustrated by Hannah Whitty (Ages 3-6)

A little mouse would like a sweet treat, so he and his mother head out to collect all the ingredients they will need.  Given the care taken to make each ingredient there is a little bit of love in each. Together, mother and child mix up a delicious berry pie to enjoy with love.
