Canada Declares War!
It was 75 years ago today when Canada officially declared war upon Nazi Germany to join the United Kingdom and France in World War II (Over two years before USA joined the effort). This was actually the first time Canada had declared war at all, as they had only gained the authority to do so by the Statute of Westminster 1931. Canada would go on to muster up 1.1 million uniformed military personnel (from a population of only 11 million), playing a major role in the war effort with a substantially large naval fleet and air force.
We might make our northern neighbors the butt of many a joke about hockey, maple syrup and/or saying ‘aboot’, but there’s no denying their importance as an ally during times of trouble. Why not check out one of the many books about Canada’s military, both fact and fiction, available from your local library branch? It’s always a good day to read and learn something new.
