Becoming Flight: The Heavy Duty Guide to Ornithology

Poems composed by Wisconsin born writer Paul Zarzyski and birds illustrated by Milwaukee artist Tom Stack.

Despite what the title says, Zarzyski has not penned a “heavy duty guide to ornithology.” Delightful bird portraits accompany the lovely poetry enveloped in each of its six parts of this book. The poems paint beautiful detailed pictures of life and, naturally, some observations about birds.

For example, apparently magpies don’t care much for tofu. Stack’s bird portraits precede these interesting nuggets of ornithological information to help make the image complete. Unless you are familiar with Tom’s work, you will be surprised to see the birds wearing clothing. Don’t be distracted. The birds remain cleverly recognizable when compared to the real feathered being.

One of the interesting features of this production is that the reader must unfold a nest-like set of folded passages to gain access to the text.

The Milwaukee Public Library owns number 55 of 125 printed of this beautifully crafted autographed edition printed in 2004.
