The Americans on D-Day:  A Photographic History of the Normandy Invasion by Martin K.A. Morgan

The invasion of France on June 6th, 1944 is undoubtedly one of the greatest military operations in the history of modern warfare. Though the invasion of Okinawa a year later was the largest assault of WWII, D-Day is the most revered.

This stunning tabletop book features over 400 photos, most taken by official U.S. Army, Navy and Coast Guard photographers. Each photograph has a meticulously researched caption that explains the content and equipment shown in the photo.

We see the buildup of supplies and men in England before the invasion. We see horrific images of crashed gliders and the troops who flew in them. We see the beaches from the perspective of the Navy and Coast Guard ships that brought the troops and their supplies to Normandy. We see huge naval guns offer support for the landing troops. And, most interesting to me, we see the invasion through the eyes of the common soldier or paratrooper.

Anastasia Hollings once said “Every picture tells a story.” In the case of this remarkable book, we get over 400 stories that needed to be told.
