Milwaukee Public Library Hours & Locations Close

Photography and Video Requests

Many times individuals wish to take photographs of/in Milwaukee Public Libraries, especially the Central Library because of its architectural features.  Also, as a public institution where news and features may occur, representatives from print and broadcast media may be assigned to film at a library event or location. The Milwaukee Public Library complies with such requests in the following manner:

I. Permission from Library

A. Non-Commercial

All requests for non-commercial uses must have permission from the Librarian-In-Charge (Branch Manager or designated Librarian-In-Charge of library; Deputy City Librarian in charge of Central Library or designee).  Photography or videography is generally permitted if it is for:

  1. Student projects
  2. Strictly personal use (wedding, graduation, engagement)

When granting permission, the Librarian-In-Charge must obtain the following information:

  1. Name of the person
  2. Telephone number where he/she can be reached
  3. Purpose of the filming/photographing
B. Members of the Media and/or Commercial

All requests made by any members of the media (print, online, broadcast), or for commercial use (fashion layouts, commercials, etc.) must be submitted to Communications & Marketing for approval and making the necessary arrangements. There are time and space restrictions, as well as a service charge, for commercial photography or videography.

II. Permission from Subjects:

Under no circumstances may the public or members of the media take photographs or video without the express permission of any library customers or staff who would be prominently included within the composition.

If any person to be photographed or videotaped is under 18 years of age, permission must be obtained from a parent or adult guardian on behalf of said minor child before filming.

Please note the following:
  • Photography/videography must not interfere with public service.
  • Doorways, steps, or elevators cannot be blocked while taking photos or videos.
  • Photography/videography must be completed no later than 15 minutes prior to closing.
  • Photographer/videographer must have permission from subjects and, in the case of minors, parent or legal guardian before filming.
