East Temporary Site

East Library will be closed beginning Monday, November 10-21, 2014 . While the collection is moved from the temporary site, the East location will be entirely unavailable.
Patrons who usually pick up holds at East Library will have two options from Sunday, November 9 until Saturday, November 22:

»  Holds can be sent to other locations. The closest city library to East is Martin Luther King Library at 310 W. Locust St.

»  In the online catalog, you can "Freeze" your hold. This will prevent a hold from being filled until it is "Unfrozen". See the CountyCat help videos or ask your local librarian for assistance if you need help freezing your holds.

The East Library temporary address is on Murray Ave., but the East Library entrance faces E. Greenwich Ave. [map]

During construction of the new East Branch, the library is temporarily relocated at 2430 N. Murray Ave. The temporary library space houses a smaller collection of materials, laptops which patrons can check out and use while visiting the library, hold pick-ups, a book drop and access to the many virtual amenities the Milwaukee Public Library system has available to library card holders. The temporary space will maintain the same library hours.

Children and adult programming will not be held in the temporary space. Patrons are encouraged to visit Central Library or Martin Luther King Library

The Standard @ East Library

Milwaukee residents will soon have a new East Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library. Construction is now underway on a multi-use development on the site - The Standard @ East Library - a 5-story building housing a new 16,000 square foot library, 99 apartments with underground parking, surface parking for library patrons and a retail space adjacent to the library on the first floor. The Standard @ East Library is being developed by HSI, Inc. and designed by Engberg Anderson. For more information contact (414) 227-0900 or visit

With the support of Mayor Tom Barrett and the Common Council, the Milwaukee Public Library Board of Trustees approved the construction of a new East Branch as part of the mixed-use development. The library redevelopment is targeted for completion in December of 2014.

Milwaukee Public Library selected HGA Architects to design the new library and the design team has been hard at work in 2013 developing the new library space.

“I am truly honored to have been selected for this public art commission. I have called this city 'home' for the past 16 years and have always considered the East Library to be ‘my library,’” said Chi. “I feel a special sense of duty to give back to this place that has given so much to me and my family over the years. It is my hope that this artwork will help rekindle a sense of wonder in all of us, and open our eyes and minds to the potential for beauty to reveal itself in every aspect of our daily lives.”
