Krug Educational Series presents ... A Talk on the Modern Poster by Jim Slauson, MIAD Professor of Art And Design History  Just before 1800, the German playwright and actor Johann Senefelder invented a simplified and inexpensive method of printing his plays in black and white, a method that became known as lithography. When color was introduced into the process 30 years later in France, chromolithography was born, and so was the modern poster. These large and colorful forms expanded not only the world of advertising, but that of art as well. The Golden Age of the Poster flourished from 1871-1914 and beyond.  Many of the greatest artistic talents of the age brought art to advertising, and advertising to art in what became known as Le Belle Époch - The Beautiful Age.
