Meet Author Sue Burke: Semiosis at East

Saturday, June 16, 2018 - 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Audience: Adults

Categories: Author/Storyteller

Meet Sue Burke, author of "Semiosis." Forced to land on a planet they aren't prepared for, human colonists rely on their limited resources to survive. The planet provides a lush but inexplicable landscape--trees offer edible, addictive fruit one day and poison the next, while the ruins of an alien race are found entwined in the roots of a strange plant. Conflicts between generations arise as they struggle to understand one another and grapple with an unknowable alien intellect. Sue Burke was born in Milwaukee in 1955 and began writing professionally as a teenager for her local newspaper. Even before she graduated from UWM in 1976, she was an avid science fiction fan. She has worked for newspapers and magazines in the Milwaukee area as a reporter and editor, and began writing fiction in 1995. In addition to news reports, she has published essays, poetry, and more than thirty short stories. She lived in Madrid, Spain, from 2000 to 2016, where she became a certified translator from Spanish into English, and has translated short stories, novels, poetry, and historical works from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. More about her and her novel Semiosis is at by Boswell Books. Books will be available for purchase.

Location: East Library "Ellipse" Community Room
