The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North & A Madness of Angels by Kate Griffin

By MPL Staff on Sep 8, 2014 3:16 PM

If you were as enchanted with Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life as I was, then you’ll enjoy The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North. Harry August, much like the protagonist in Atkinson’s book, lives his life over and over. Every time that he dies, he is born again in the same time and place, his memories of his previous lives usually coming back to him around the age of four. In the opening pages of the book, a dying August is given a message: the end of the world is coming, quicker than it usually does, and it is being caused by a Kalachakra, someone like him who lives in endless cycles of death and rebirth. August spends his subsequent lives attempting to figure out just what has gone wrong, and how to stop the speeding up of the end of the world.

Claire North is a pseudonym for British author Catherine Webb, who also writes under the name of Kate Griffin. A Madness of Angels, she wrote as Griffin and is an urban fantasy novel about the sorcerer Matthew Swift, and his attempt to discover who murdered him two years prior to the start of the novel. It takes place in a world that is easily recognizable as our own, except for the electric blue angles that live in the telephone lines, and the other supernatural forces that lurk just out of sight.
