¡Hispanic Heritage Month 2014!

Bienvenidos to National Hispanic Heritage Month 2014! Running from September 15th to October 15th every year, the celebration began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968. In 1988, the observation was extended to an entire month and was recognized by law as an official national event. (http://hispanicheritagemonth.gov/about/)

Hispanics trace their roots to Europe, Central and South America, Africa, and many parts of the Caribbean. Their contributions to American culture are widespread and touch on just about everything, including music, language, literature, art, fashion, and food.

Our blog posts for National Hispanic Heritage Month will have a local focus. According to the book Latinos in Milwaukee by Joseph A. Rodriguez and Walter Sava, the earliest known Latino to settle in Milwaukee came in 1884. Settlers of Mexican origin started arriving in the 1920s, followed by Puerto Ricans, Cubans and, more recently, immigrants of Central and South American heritage. We now honor their role in the enrichment of our city's culture with festivals like Mexican Fiesta on the lakefront and other events.

Please join us here at Now@MPL throughout the next month as we discuss Milwaukee's Latin American heritage! ¡Vamonos!
