Dark Magic and Cowboys Meet in The Sixth Gun

By Tim R on Aug 22, 2015 11:27 AM

Set in the bloody days of the Civil War, Harvey and Eisner Award nominated series The Sixth Gun mixes the old west with myth and magic to create something spectacular. There are six pistols imbued with dark magical powers, capable of bringing about the end of the world if united, and five have already fallen into the hands of evil men and women. The sixth gun, long lost, has resurfaced in the hands of an honest and good woman, Becky Montcrief. Becky has no idea the terrible calamity coming for her, and she will only survive through the help of Drake Sinclair, a man who seems to know all too much about the vicious cutthroats coming for Becky’s gun.

Cullen Bunn's writing on Sixth Gun is superb. He creates such a vivid world of hard frontier living intermingled with monsters and magic that man was not meant to know. I’ve always been a fan of the ‘Weird West’ genre, and Cullen hits all the right buttons with this series. Becky is a fabulous character, and we get to watch her learn and grow into the true hero of the work, while Drake struggles with his blackened past and his own failings to become more than what he once was. The supporting cast is all stellar, full of a variety of folk with their own interesting and fantastical tales. I would be amiss not to also mention the art of Brian Hurtt, which brings the story to life in vivid color and detail.

So, if you want your western mixed with a heavy dose of the fantastical, you can’t do much better than The Sixth Gun. There are several volumes out already and available at a library near you!
